There are plenty of things to do on and around Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, which rises 4,406ft above sea level. It sits majestically at the head of the Loch Linnhe, dominating the scenery for miles. The small town of Fort William rests cosily at its base.
Ben Nevis is a challenging walk, and can certainly threaten the inexperienced walker. The biggest threat will be the unpredictable and fast-changing weather, chilling winds often sweeping through the mountain. Although not as high as the Alpine mountains, Ben Nevis is situated on more northerly latitude, so the climate is considered to be similar to Arctic conditions. For many people, though, perhaps because of these difficulties, this is seen as an irresistible challenge.
The Ben Nevis Distillery is placed in Fort William, where visitors are welcome to enjoy a guided tour of the 178 year old distillery, and savour the fantastic quality whisky.
The Scottish Mountaineering Club was founded in 1889, and organises guided climbs and walks up Ben Nevis, as well as many other areas, with many years of experience under the belts of the guides. For climbers and mountaineers, the main attraction lies in the 700 metre high cliffs of the north face as it harbours some of the best scrambles and rock climbs of all ranges of difficulties; it is also one of the best sites for ice climbing.
Understandably popular with tourists, there is plenty of accommodation to suit your needs, so be sure to book online to ensure that you get that cosy en suite room that you’ll be hankering after at the end of a long and tiring day spent on the magnificent mountain.
