Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is on the north west coast of Scotland and is the most photographed of castles in Scotland. As a consequence, it is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland. Surrounded by unique, majestic scenery, the castle sits proudly on the point of an island near the picturesque village of Dornie, where three sea lochs meet.

The first fortified castle is known to have been built by Alexander II in the thirteenth century as a defence against the Vikings. It was largely destroyed during the Jacobite uprising in the eighteenth century, and lay in ruins for nearly 200 years. Finally, in the early twentieth century, it was rebuilt. Now its splendour can be enjoyed by the many thousands of visitors to the area every year.

Unsurprisingly, this scenic spot is a popular place for romance, so if you’re looking for the perfect Scottish venue for a wedding, Eilean Castle could be just the right place for you.

Today, visitors have access to most of the castle and have the opportunity to explore the building, the grounds and the rich history of the area. The castle houses exhibitions, a visitor’s centre, a coffee shop and a gift shop, and there is ample parking in the grounds. The castle is open between March and November and asks for a small entrance fee.
