The sea life around the Isle of Skye and the coast of Lochalsch is remarkable. It is home to a variety of sea life and birds, including seals, dolphins, whales, Arctic Skua, Gannet, Puffin and many more.
For those interested in scuba diving, the types of dives you can expect are reef, wreck and wall. The marine life you could expect to see includes basking sharks, porpoises, dolphins, jellyfish, starfish, eels and much more. Under water visibility is generally good for the UK, with 10 metres being the common depth. Skye is home to beautiful reefs, so if you can stand the relative cold, then Skye is perfect for the keen diver.
How about making a special trip to see if you can see some whales? Whale spotting months are between mid-June to mid-September, and ‘Sea.fari Adventures’ begin scheduled trips from Easter. Limited numbers are available though – only four to a boat – so ensure that you put your name down in time for a once in a life-time opportunity!
The geography of Skye and Lochalsch is quite special. Some locals and visitors are lucky enough to experience the ‘Northern Lights’, when great swathes of light emblazon the sky. Typically associated with Winter, you are more likely to see the lights in the darker season simply because they will be clearer against a darker background.
“The stark rise of the jagged Cuillin ridge drops to the gentle white of a soft sand beach. Inlets, bays and islands create a complex lacework pattern with the sea. Tiny villages and historic keeps are familiar and fascinating”. On your exploration of the stunning sea life in the area, you will not be disappointed when you reach dry land and explore the villages and sample the delicious local produce.
